Experts agree that U.S. railways do not make a profit, whether publicly funded or privately held. But that hasn't stopped two proposals for passenger rail service from Las Vegas to California. Each is competing for a portion of the $8 billion in stimulus money for high-speed rail. The privately funded DesertXpress train faces off against a non-profit entity backing magnetic levitation trains.
