Pennsylvania engineers are replacing a bridge's steel deck with fiber-reinforced polymer, a type of fiberglass composed of tubes of continuous glass fibers. "The tubes actually have higher tensile strength than your typical steel reinforcement," said Jerome O'Connor, president and chief executive officer of Bridge Composites LLC. The fiberglass deck on the bridge can be installed in two weeks, compared to two months for concrete decks.
