Eighth-graders have about the same access to music and arts classes now as they did a decade ago but are less likely to go to museums or other art destinations on field trips, according to a U.S. Education department survey of 260 schools. About 8,000 eighth-grade students tested on music and arts concepts indicated limited arts knowledge as well as racial- and socioeconomic-achievement gaps. Officials said the test was conducted among a much smaller group of students than in the past.
