Memphis, Tenn., schools may switch to block scheduling, which would increase class time from 55 minutes to 90 minutes, under a proposal that has received tentative approval by the school board. "One of the things I'm concerned about is we have too much spill time," said Superintendent Kriner Cash. "Our class periods are too short; by the time you get in class, get settled and then get engaged, actually engaged in learning, you have five minutes of learning before it's time to shut down."
