A study in Pediatrics found that children of women who have autoimmune diseases -- such as celiac disease, Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis -- have a three times higher risk for autism. Researchers said there may be a genetic overlap between the conditions, or an environmental trigger that affects the fetus, but that the findings would be useful in tracking down the cause or causes of autism.
