If a successful employer like Google has to trim its perk package, it's no wonder smaller outfits are giving up fringe benefits such as company cars, catered lunches and gym memberships. Cutting perks actually does little to affect the bottom line, experts note, but the cost-cutting makes a statement that everything possible is being done to avoid layoffs, notes Iain Morris of Mercer in Toronto.
