As passengers increasingly rely on personal electronic devices during flight, airlines could save money by cutting back on public entertainment options, according to analysts. Wi-Fi, USB ports and electrical sockets allow fliers to access computers, music players and other devices throughout even the longest flights, possibly rendering in-flight entertainment systems redundant. Getting rid of the excess weight is just one advantage to the airlines in removing IFE systems, according to analyst Peter Harbinson. "Fuel burned, regular engineering checks and licensing fees to movie studios all add up to a considerable amount of money for airlines."
