The Michigan Keystone Intensive Care Unit Project, which was launched in 2004 to reduce the number of health care-related infections in the state, is "a success story in American health care," a recent HHS report said. The project reduced infections by 66% in its first 18 months, saving more than 1,500 lives and slashing $200 million in care expenses, the report said.
