Hospital IT leaders seem satisfied with open-source electronic medical record software such as VistA because it is easier to implement and does not pose difficulties to users. David Whiles, CIO of Texas-based Midland Memorial Hospital, believes that open-source EMR software, which he says could work for hospitals of various sizes, remains to be a practical option for hospital groups that can't afford to adopt a commercial EMR product.
