A 5,000-ton boring machine will eventually drill the 1.7-mile, $1.9 billion tunnel that will replace Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct. Officials say it will take up to two years to build the machine, which will cost more than $50 million. The Washington State Department of Transportation will ask interested engineering firms to demonstrate they have the expertise to build and design the tunnel.
