The National Transportation Safety Board is advising that design standards for commercial airplanes be strengthened so that they can withstand collisions with large birds. The NTSB will recommend that the FAA update its standards, which were set in the 1970s. Since then, many species of large birds in North America have substantially increased in number. Also, air traffic has increased, meaning more aircraft are sharing the skies with more large birds.
