After more than a decade of negotiations, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport in Virginia has purchased a church located within the airport's safety zone. The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, built in 1875, was deemed an obstruction by the FAA after safety zones were redefined in the 1990s. "There's a liability for the airport for anyone or any property that's damaged because it's in the airspace," airport director Barbara Hutchinson explained.
