Offering a discount is rarely a good idea, Steve McKee writes, because it can have long-term effects on a company's brand and its ability to innovate. To see any benefit from a price cut, companies need to be strategic about their discounts, he argues: Make them temporary, offer deals that fit the brand's image and look for new products that can hit a lower price point without sacrificing profit margins.
