In the first increase it has seen since February 2008, Hawaii showed an increase of visitor arrivals of 1.3% in July. Although heavily discounted rates are credited with boosting visitors, the pricing has taken its toll on hotels and, a 12.4% drop in visitor spending in July did not help matters. Total spending by visitors for the first seven months of the year dropped by 16%, or $1.1 billion, from the same period a year ago.
