Canada's Vancouver International Airport has become the first commercial airport to add cameras to its radar system for detecting foreign objects on runways, providing visual confirmation day or night of possible safety hazards in the path of aircraft. With the linked system, radar alerts operators of possible debris, and cameras then zoom in to determine whether the object is "a two-inch worm that poses no threat, or a broken zipper from a suitcase that does," according to an airport official.
