Nurse practitioners will be critical to help fill the gap in access to medical services caused by health reform that would expand coverage to millions of Americans and a growing shortage of primary care physicians. NPs also are popular with health care reformers because they provide patient-centered care and focus on preventive health. NP groups hope the increased awareness among lawmakers will help push legislation easing restrictions to the scope of their practice.
