Amgen's Vectibix, or panitumumab, combined with the chemotherapy regimen FOLFIRI, has obtained approval from the European Commission for use as first-line therapy for wild-type KRAS metastatic colorectal cancer in adult patients. Vectibix previously received EU approval for use in colorectal cancer patients in combination with another chemotherapy regimen and as a second-line treatment.
Independent risk factors for poor outcomes in bariatric surgery patients include a history of deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus, obstructive sleep apnea, and impaired functional status, according to a new study. Researchers added the overall risk of death and other adverse outcomes was low and varied by patient.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the government will give states more money for projects that fight obesity out of the $1 billion Congress approved for disease prevention in the stimulus bill. She called for increasing fruits and vegetables in school lunches, encouraging grocers to sell more fresh produce in poor areas, and more physical education classes in schools as well as investments to encourage walking and biking.
Interviews with people who survived colorectal, breast and prostate cancers found those who exercised more and had a better diet also had a higher physical quality of life, researchers reported. The study also found the more people weighed, the poorer their physical quality of life.
