Unilever has signed on to develop some of P.F. Chang's China Bistro's most popular foods as frozen entrees to be sold in supermarkets. "Our biggest challenge was finding a partner that could produce a frozen meal that we'd be proud to put our name on," said Rick Federico, chairman and co-CEO of P.F. Chang's. "We've found that in Unilever."
For the most part, families aren't even halfway done with their back-to-school shopping, a survey for the National Retail Federation found. A majority of families said they plan to go to a discount store, and sales or coupons are factoring into about half of back-to-school purchases.
Costco founders Jim Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman talk about the origins of their business, competing with Wal-Mart and traveling for a decade. Brotman came up with the concept of Costco after being inspired by French hypermarkets.
Sears has launched a Christmas Club card for use in Sears and Kmart stores. Customers can add value to the card through Nov. 14 and receive a reward worth 3% of the value of the card's balance. "I think shoppers like the idea of saving ahead for Christmas," said National Retail Federation spokeswoman Ellen Davis, who also said this was a rare move for a retailer.
