A study found people who consume a large amount of alcohol have a sevenfold increased risk of esophageal cancer, an 80% higher risk of colon cancer and a 50% higher risk of lung cancer, compared with light drinkers or people who abstain from alcohol. Researchers also found heavy drinking was tied to an increased risk for cancers of the stomach, liver, rectum, pancreas and prostate.
