With districts forced to cut costs, teachers and parents are covering more classroom expenses. A survey by the National Education Association found that teachers spend an average of $500 of their own money on supplies each year. A Chicago-area administrator says the district provides only "bare essentials," such as textbooks and manuals, and teachers must provide the rest. Some teachers reach into their own pockets to provide supplies for disadvantaged students.
