As the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International meets this week in Washington, the top issue on the agenda is winning FAA approval for flying UAVs in the nation's airspace. UAV manufacturers see a booming market for disaster response, law enforcement and scientific research, but first they must convince the FAA that drones can safely fly alongside piloted aircraft. The FAA says it is receiving increased requests for UAV flights in U.S. airspace, and next week agency officials will meet with other government departments and air traffic experts to "make sure we're on the right track" with developing standards.
