The University of Alaska Fairbanks recommends that private airports in Alaska plant grass for runways rather than spreading gravel. Hardy species of grass such as red fescue can even be planted over gravel runways without laying down topsoil first. Stephen Brown, an agriculture and horticulture agent for the university's Cooperative Extension Service, spoke last week in Palmer at a workshop for 50 people on grass runways.
