Acute pancreatitis is a very painful condition that requires hospitalization but usually clears within a few days and rarely results in a second episode or recurrence, an American Cancer Society expert says. A gallstone obstruction is the most common cause of the condition, followed by alcohol damage to the pancreas, but about one-third of cases are due to other causes that may not be identified.
