Choice Hotels International signed a lease to relocate its corporate headquarters to Rockville, Md., when its lease expires in 2013. The company, now based in Silver Spring, Md., will occupy more than 130,000 square feet of the Rockville Metro Plaza II, which will begin construction this summer.
Dan Wittner, chief customer officer at RBM Technologies, says most retail-sector efforts toward sustainability focus on the front of the store. However, retailers also can "green their back end" through a range of initiatives. "In particular, retailers have a unique opportunity to help improve sustainability efforts throughout their merchandising and in-store marketing campaigns," Wittner writes.
A program in Portland, Ore., takes people without access to cars and turns them into bicycle commuters in an effort to give them more access to jobs. Community Cycling Center gave bikes and commuting accessories to 231 people last year and taught them safety and maintenance skills.
Khosla Ventures has launched two cleantech funds, Khosla Ventures III and Khosla Ventures Seed, raising $1.1 billion. "I like to call it 'main tech,' not cleantech," Vinod Khosla told the Los Angeles Times. "We're doing bioplastics, lighting, engines, water and air conditioning -- almost anything that can be made renewable, sustainable, more efficient and cheaper."
