Department of Homeland Security officials this week said the E-Verify program is capable of handling a surge in queries now that federal contractors are required to use the system. More than 1,400 companies have signed up to use the database since it became a requirement earlier this month, bringing the total to almost 151,000. The system is expected to process 9 million queries in fiscal 2009, up from 6.6 million in fiscal 2008.
