Scientists continue to be baffled by an illness that sufferers call multiple chemical sensitivity. While some doctors say MCS symptoms stem from exposure to ordinary chemicals and pollutants, such as pesticides, paint, smoke and perfumes, other say they are a manifestation of psychological stress. The lack of scientific evidence linking chemicals and MCS symptoms has discouraged major medical groups from recognizing the illness as a clinical disease.
