Despite tight budgets, schools across Maine are expanding a state program to provide a laptop to every student. In 2002, the Maine Learning Technology Initiative was started to create a 1-to-1 computer-to-student ratio in seventh and eighth grades. MLTI provided middle schools with the funds needed for equipment and services. But high schools will receive money only for the installation of a wireless-network setup. Because of that, only about half of the state's high schools will provide a laptop to students this year.
