New research suggests that gravity, water density and ocean currents may cause sea levels to rise faster near New York than at other ports with dense populations. Meanwhile, city planners are taking steps to incorporate the possibility of floods from high seas into their efforts to re-engineer the city. They also note that flooding could have a tremendous economic impact because the city's subways, plumbing, power mains and cables are underground.
