An effort to overhaul the social studies curriculum in Texas has led some well-known figures such as Gen. Colin Powell to be eliminated from lessons. Many people were no longer considered relevant by writing teams. The mention of Christmas was also preserved in the curriculum. Two experts who had originally proposed dropping César Chávez and former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall from the standards backed away from those recommendations, which had been criticized.
