Only 25% of Rhode Island fourth-, eighth- and 11th-grade students who took state science tests this past spring earned a proficient rating, according to test results announced Wednesday. Gov. Don Carcieri said that student performance on the tests was "unacceptable." State officials said instruction has not caught up with new state science standards, and Carcieri announced the creation of a round table to look at ways to improve teacher training.
