The language style that students use outside of school might not be similar to the academic language they use in the classroom, and teachers should take that into consideration, according to one researcher who spoke during a Dublin conference. "Children use different varieties of language, and when they come into the school context, there is one particular variety of language -- a literate or academic style of language -- which is expected in that context," the researcher said of academic language.
