The heads of AT&T and Verizon Communications offered subtly different outlooks on the state of the industry Thursday, but they agreed it was difficult to say when a recovery would begin. Speaking at an analysts conference, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said wireless customers should rise sequentially this quarter because of the iPhone, but he added that overall business remained flat. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg countered that the "economy is contracting," adding that he sees the wireless market's middle segment as a key growth area.
