Construction crews are slowly replacing the 300-foot span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge as part of a project aimed at helping the bridge withstand earthquakes. The bridge was closed starting Thursday night and over the Labor Day weekend, the first weekday closing of the bridge since 1989. A temporary bridge will serve as a detour while a piece of the old bridge is demolished and replaced with a new piece that is seismically correct.
