Despite the promise of new technology, the TSA says passengers won't see a quick end to regulations limiting the weight of liquids carried onto commercial airline flights. Former TSA Administrator Kip Hawley predicted that the 3-ounce limit would be lifted this fall, but an agency spokeswoman now says that target will not be met. TSA already has installed 875 X-ray machines capable of running software to detect liquid explosives, but bringing another 370 commercial airports online will require at least another year. Even then, some experts say the system will still require some tweaks. Security consultant Rich Roth says the software currently signals too many false positives, requiring additional screening of liquids that pose no threat.
