Critical and costly equipment, including PET, MRI and CT, are underused in British National Health Service trusts, according to a report from the TaxPayers' Alliance. The average annual use of a PET scanner was 956 scans, which is below the Department of Health's goal of as many as 2,500 yearly scans. The underutilization of equipment is a "serious concern" in the face of the ongoing recession, the TPA said.
