Wal-Mart is expanding its $10 toy program to include 100 toys this holiday season. The $10 toy program was launched in 2008 to encourage holiday sales. "What we learned from last holiday was that price mattered more than ever," a company executive said.
Supermarket chains such as Giant are experimenting with smaller locations and specialized inventory management that may help them reach customers who would otherwise shop at convenience stores. Giant's smaller "Giant To Go" locations stock only the items that sell best in that area, as better inventory management allows them to offer cheaper goods. Regional chains across the country and even retail titans such as Wal-Mart are also experimenting with smaller, more nimble locations.
Bass Pro CEO Johnny Morris, last year's National Retail Federation's Retail Innovator of the Year, has succeeded in building a chain of retail destinations. His expensive model may need a little tweaking amid the recession, but his devotion to detail remains a priority.
KFC will close several restaurants across the country for a few hours each throughout the month of October as part of its World Hunger Relief Fund. The restaurant chain recently served about 100 residents of Wayside Christian Mission and Interlink Counseling Services in Kentucky.
