Multiple studies indicate that whole flaxseed, but not flaxseed oil, can be beneficial in cutting cholesterol levels. A review of 28 studies involving 1,500-plus men and women linked whole flaxseed to reductions in total cholesterol and "bad" LDL cholesterol, though consumption did not appear to significantly alter levels of harmful triglycerides or "good" HDL cholesterol.
