Concerns over climate change are adding to the pressure for a modernized U.S. air traffic control system, TIME reports. Under threat of a carbon tax, the aviation industry wants pilots to fly the straightest routes possible, but current radars force inefficient zig-zagging. If the NextGen system is rolled out by 2018 as planned, the industry will use about 1 billion gallons less fuel, the FAA estimates.
