The majority of customers globally would frequent a supermarket based on its environmental policies, according to a survey. About 80% of respondents use grocery-based recycling facilities, and 66% would rather buy locally produced goods than imported products.
ICSC's Idea Exchange, in Richmond, Va., brought together retailers and commercial real estate owners to discuss expansion opportunities after a year of retail contraction. "It's a good place to make relationships," one attendee said.
Retailers are hoping that a return to the classic holiday style -- including gingerbread houses and classic Christmas colors -- will entice shoppers this holiday season. In previous years, retailers such as Home Depot focused on trendier holiday displays, but this year they have reverted to the old-fashioned look.
Analysts likely will use September's sales figures to make predictions about the holiday season. About 30 retailers are expected to report their numbers Thursday. Best Buy is one retailer that has seen a turnaround in terms of consumer demand, but the company still will continue to focus on price for the holiday season.
