The future of liberal education in the U.S. is dependent on students being able to distance themselves from their culture and history through the study of another language, argues Dan Edelstein, an author and assistant professor of French at Stanford University. But at a time when many universities are minimizing their foreign-language requirements, proponents of foreign-language study are fighting an uphill battle, Edelstein writes in this opinion column.
