Julianna Trunko, a police officer and mother of a son with autism, started the support group Cops 4 Kids with Autism three years ago and has seen it grow to include about 50 officers from four counties. The officers, in full uniform, drop off donated items and gift baskets for families of children with autism. The effort also helps to familiarize officers with the condition, which Trunko said is important since police officers are often the first to encounter children with autism who become lost or overwhelmed in large crowds.
