The Environmental Protection Agency plans to study the health risks of a herbicide called atrazine, which is often used as a weedkiller. The EPA will examine atrazine in drinking water and evaluate its links to health issues such as birth defects and cancer. "This is a strong signal that the world is changing for some of the most widely used chemicals," said Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
