Almost half of the $30 million that the National Institutes of Health plans to spend on studying the safety of bisphenol A will come from the economic stimulus bill, according to a spokeswoman for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. BPA has been linked to infertility, weight gain and other medical problems in studies of animals, but the NIH research will focus on the effects of the chemical on humans.
