Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Minn., arranged a hearing to allow patients and officials from medical-device firms in the state to air their opposition to a Senate health reform bill that would mandate device makers to pay $40 billion in taxes over 10 years. Attendees said such a proposal would affect innovation and result in job losses, among other consequences. "We appreciate Rep. Paulsen shining a light on the harmful effects of this tax on jobs and innovation. The more policymakers and the public learn about this tax the less they like it," said Stephen Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association.
