Joanna Fowler, a molecular imaging researcher, today will receive the National Medal of Science award for her major contributions to nuclear medicine research, including work on the fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose radiotracer used in PET/CT imaging. Fowler's more recent initiatives include the use of PET in studies on cocaine and methamphetamine addiction and on dopamine and dopamine transporters that provided clues on the cause of Parkinson's disease.
