Fifth- and sixth-grade students with special needs in a New Jersey district who are being taught out of district may be able to return to their community for instruction next year. The Berkeley Township school board has asked for $114,000 in federal stimulus funds to convert an elementary-school science lab into a special-education classroom. The proposal, if approved, would save the district money. According to the district director of special services, the district pays about $50,000 for each student it sends to out-of-district programs.
