Twenty-six students are enrolled this year at a new private school in New York City where annual tuition is $28,500. The school caters only to students who are gifted. The Speyer Legacy School will use special private-school admission test scores, reports from preschool teachers, and students' performance in simulated classes in considering candidates for admission. Noting high demand for the city's few gifted-education programs, school officials will begin with classes in grades K-2 and plan to increase enrollment to 324 students in K-8 by 2015.
