The USDA could bring "real benefits" to people by focusing its agricultural research on "a specific, narrow set of scientific problems," said Rajiv Shah, the agency's undersecretary for research, education and economics. Shah said he plans to focus the agency's resources on food safety and biofuels, among other priority areas, and will evaluate research being conducted by USDA researchers and grants to outside research groups.
