Taco Bell's Waffle Taco, one of the 4,000 to 4,500 new product ideas the chain's innovation team considered in 2013, was a concept that came together quickly for Product Development Director Heather Mottershaw. The chain, which aims to position itself as the leader in quickservice food innovation, launches dozens of new products in test markets each year, eight or 10 of which will ultimately make the national menu.
Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed opted to shake things up as the chain's 50th birthday approached, challenging the team to come up with a new crunchy taco. What followed after much innovation, testing, tasting and even a trip to Home Depot was the creation of the Doritos Locos Taco and a partnership between brands that may flavor Taco Bell's menu for the next half century.
With Halloween and the World Series coinciding this year, Taco Bell is offering free Black Jack tacos from 6 p.m. to midnight Oct. 31. The company previously has teamed with Major League Baseball to mark the series with food giveaways.
