New York state and Vermont officials on Monday said the Champlain Bridge between Crown Point, N.Y., and Chimney Point, Vt., is beyond repair. New York Gov. David Paterson said the state will tear down the bridge and replace it. Recent inspections discovered the potential of "sudden, potentially catastrophic, bridge failure" because of disentegrating underwater concrete piers. Officials said they hope to start the demolition process soon. No official budget is set, but one lawmaker suggests replacement could cost $50 million.
